About Joseph
Joseph Brown is a cellist and educator based in Atlanta, Georgia, known for his rich tone, thoughtful musicality, and passion for connecting with audiences across traditional and nontraditional spaces. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance under the mentorship of Richard Weiss of the Cleveland Orchestra, following early private studies with Karen Freer of the Atlanta Symphony as part of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Talent Development Program.
Joseph maintains an active orchestral career, performing with ensembles such as the Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Opera, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, and the Savannah Philharmonic, among others. Through this work, he has collaborated with world-class conductors including JoAnn Falletta, Robert Spano, Larry Rachleff, and Carl Tapilow.
His summer festival experience includes the Aspen Music Festival, Miami Music Festival, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Indiana University Summer String Academy, Brevard Music Center, and the Sphinx NAAS Audition Intensive, where he developed his artistry alongside exceptional young musicians from across the country. He has also studied with distinguished cellists such as Ilya Finkelstein, Stephen Geber, Susan Moses, Si-Yan Li, and Jonah Kim.
In addition to his work on stage, Joseph is deeply committed to music education and community engagement. He teaches at several schools throughout Atlanta, leads sectionals, and maintains a growing private studio. He also serves in the Education Department at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, supporting initiatives that bring classical music to students and communities across the region. His teaching philosophy centers on accessibility, empowerment, and musical curiosity—values that guide his work as both a performer and educator.
Outside of music, Joseph enjoys exploring new cities, spending time in nature, and creating new dishes in the kitchen. He calls Atlanta home and is continually building a life that blends artistry, purpose, and curiosity.
